Home : About the Old Dubbo Gaol : Escapes

At the Old Dubbo Gaol there were many escapes and daring escape attempts!

Some of these include;

  • Two prisoners who burned through the roof of their cells to burrow through a cavity only to be caught once they had pushed back the iron shingles.
  • A female prisoner who fell from a drainpipe in the process of escape and broke her ankle.
  • A prisoner used a rope and hook to escape over the wall only to be chased down the main street by the Gaoler who was wearing his dressing gown, and slippers.
  • A man who climbed from three sets of roofs to jump over the walls of the Gaol.

There were many other recorded escapes and escape attempts. The conditions at the Gaol were basic and the punishments were harsh. It would not be hard to imagine why many would want to do anything to escape from such a place.

The entrance to the Old Dubbo Gaol is located just off Macquarie Street, near the old clock tower and across the road from Woolworths
